Why Play-Based Photo Sessions Are Best for Kids

Do you avoid booking family photos because your kids won’t stay still for a second? Or maybe you’re nervous that your wild (but wonderful!) crew won’t behave and the session will be a bust.
I get it! A family photo session is a lot to prepare for and the stereotype around family photos is that everyone has to be on their best behavior while being forced into awkward poses and somehow still managing to hold natural smiles.
But, there’s a better way! A way to actually have fun at a family photo session. Imagine that!
I’m Charis, an Oklahoma City family photographer and a mom of 3 kiddos. My passion is documenting the natural love and connection in families, and the only way to do that is if you and your family are having fun. So let’s talk about play-based photo sessions and why they are the secret to amazing family photos.
Staying Still Isn’t Natural for Little Kids (And That’s Okay!)

Have you noticed how your child actually learns more when they’re moving? Whether it’s fidgeting with their hands or swinging from the kitchen counter, kids often absorb more when they’re active. In fact, multiple studies show that movement supports both brain development and emotional regulation, creating a better environment for learning and interaction.
A visit to the chiropractor is a great example of the power of movement. A good chiropractic adjustment works with the body—not against it—to bring the nervous system back into balance.
As a play-based family photographer in OKC, I take the same approach. By weaving natural movement and fun interactions into my session, I help your kids feel regulated, calm, and more in control. This creates a totally different experience than the stereotypical family photo experience where everyone feels pressured into stiff, awkward poses and pasted smiles.
2. Play Creates Real Connection and Expression
When do your child’s eyes light up most? Usually, it’s when you're down on their level, engaged in something together. That’s exactly the type of interactions that are encouraged in a play-based photo session.
When I’m providing a photo session for families with kids, we play games like Red Light, Green Light. We do piggyback rides and tickle fights. We chase, giggle, and snuggle. It is through that process of fun, everyday movement and interactions that your child relaxes, opens up, and shows their true self. It removes the pressure to perform and showcases the real joy and connection in your family.
3. Movement Builds Confidence and Comfort

Play allows kids to feel more involved in the session, rather than just being told what to do. When they’re free to move and interact naturally, they feel more in control—and that leads to fewer meltdowns and less overstimulation.
Instead of a constant stream of unfamiliar commands (“Sit still!” “Smile!” “Look here!”), they’re given space to explore and participate at their own pace. In a play-based photo session, you and your kids' job is to have fun interacting together and it’s my job as the photographer to make sure I capture those special moments.
4. Fun Photo Sessions = Memories That Last
When your child enjoys their chiropractic visit, you know it makes the next one easier. The same goes for family photo sessions!
For example, Krissy shared this with me after a fun, interactive family photo session.“You did such a wonderful job of capturing candid photos of our young family. The entire evening was enjoyable and my 3 year old exclaimed that "taking pictures is fun!" Score! These are photos that I will treasure forever.”
When a session is fun, calm, and filled with play, it sets a tone for the future. Your family won’t just have beautiful images—you’ll have a positive experience that makes everyone (yes, even your toddler!) excited for next time.
I call that a win-win for everyone.
